H.E. Jackson Engineering was established in 1923 in Zimbabwe, by Major Herbert Edward Jackson. The need arose to branch out regionally and in 2009 Premier Steel and Engineering Ltd (PSE) was formed in Malawi. Its more centrally located position allowed the company to become operational in other neighbouring countries, such as Zambia and Mozambique. In April 2017 the decision was made for PSE to revert back to its corporate company name, that being H.E. Jackson Engineering Ltd. and the head office became permanently located in Lilongwe, Malawi, with branches in Blantyre, Mzuzu and Dwangwa. As of 2022, a division has been opened in South Africa that has a specific aim of targeting renewable energy projects and engineering services in the region and is well-placed to operate in Lesotho, Swaziland and Botswana as well.
HEJ has established itself as a leading engineering and construction company, capable of undertaking turnkey contracts in the fields of Water Supply, Irrigation and Renewable Energy Projects. It serves all sectors of the economy namely mining, agriculture, industry and commerce, rural development and construction. The company's growth has also allowed diversification into other areas that complement the existing structures, such as Equipment Sales and Telecommunications.
